I am a Japanese musician based in London. I was a tour member of Frank Chickens in the '90s .I used to be a composer for contemporary classical performers such as Piano Circus, Jane Chapman, OKEANOS among others. Since I recorded a CD with Hugh Hopper in 2008, I became seriously active in performing improvisation based on avant-rock aesthetics. In 2009, I came to AvandGarde Festival with Geoff Leigh to play as a duo, there I met Chris Cutler and John Greaves and four of us decided to play together and that was the beginning of the Artaud Beats. Akim Hash is an electronic muzic producer, and more, since 1996. His work is about exploiting sound and harmonies, and their influence upon people on many levels. That's why his sounds can range from classic, electronic, world music to binaural beats. His job as an audio producer, sound designer and sound engineer in a top advertising studio from Bucharest, makes him think that there is a direct influence upon the mental, spiritual and even the phisical state of a person. Music is organised noise, therefore, absolutely anything can be used to creat music. 

Akim Hash este un producator de muzica electronica si nu numai inca din 1996. Munca lui constain exploatarea sunetului, si armoniilor, si influenta lor asupra oamenilor din mai multe puncte de vedere. Tocmai de aceea, lucrarile lui pot oscila intre muzica clasica, electronica, wolrd music saubinaural beats. De meserie producator audio, sound designer si inginer de sunet intrun studio specializat in audio pentru advertising, conceptia lui este ca sunetul influenteaza in mod direct psihicul, spiritul, bachiar si fizicu unei persoane. Muzica este zgomot organizat, tocmai de aceea, absolut orice poatefi folosit pentru a creea muzica.

BLAAKRAFT gjør sin helt spesielle form for "punk-metall møter elektronikk og blir blues". Kombinasjonen bluesriff og det industrielle har utviklet seg over tid til et improvisert uttrykk, som en blanding av psykedelia, spacerock og metallblues sammen med no-frills industristøy. Gjennom konsertering har Blaakraft fått rykte på seg for å være tight og hard, kompromissløs og fengende, en frisk pust i en improv-verden som står stille, mens Blaakraft damper som et lokomotiv, og peiser på uten hvile, uten å legge seg for noen.

BLAAKRAFT is doing its very special kind of "punk-metal meets electronics and blues". The combination of blues riffs and industrial has evolved over time into an improv expression, like a mix of psychedelia, space rock and metal blues with no-frills industrial noise. Being a live band, Blaakraft has a reputation for being tight and hard, uncompromising and catchy, a fresh breath in a stand-still-improv-world, while Blaakraft is steaming like a locomotive, and powers on without rest ,not laying down for no-one.

Kjetil Hanssen er Norges ukronede støyprins, og har utmerket seg med sine svært fysiske opptredener. I tradisjonen med Masonna, Hijokaidan kjører Hanssen på med korte og knallharde opptredener som ofte går på helsen løs. Hanssen opptrer ofte bare med en mikrofon og tre pedaler, men gir virkelig alt mens det står på.

Kjetil Hanssen is Norway's uncrowned noiseprince, and has distinguished himself with very physical appearances. In the tradition of Masonna, Hijokaidan Hanssen does short and powerful performances - injuries might appear. Hanssen often occurs only with a microphone and three pedals, but really gives everything while it lasts.

Ronny Wærnes er en av de få støyartistene som holder stand nord for polarsirkelen. Fra sin base i Bodø har Wærnes en drøss med prosjekter, blant annet Psykisk Tortur med Skjit-Lars, og industri-blues-bandet Blaakraft. I 2008 koblet han seg sammen med, Kjetil Hanssen, for en støyduo av det fysiske slaget.

Ronny Wærnes is one of the very few noise artists above the Arctic Circle. From his base in Bodø , Wærnes has a lot of projects, including " Psykisk Torture" with Skjit Lars and "Blaakraft", an industrial blues band. In 2008 he teamed up with Kjetil Hanssen from Oslo, to form a noise-duo of the physical kind.

Cassiel au Ciel
 

Cassiel au Ciel (Patrick Mengele) ist ein Experimentalmusiker aus dem hohen Norden Deutschlands.
Die Namensgebung leitet sich ab aus dem Film "Der Himmel über Berlin" von Wim Wenders. Der musikalische Stil lässt sich beschreiben als eine Mischung aus Noise, Elektro und experimentellen Klangcollagen. Instrumente wie Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzug und Electronics finden Anwendung in der Musik, aber auch Alltagsgegenstände wie Teller, Rasierer, Stühle oder Schallplatten. Neben der Musik beschäftigt sich Cassiel au Ciel mit moderner Malerei und verbindet beides mit dem Konzept: Ich male meine Musik und spiele meine Bild.

Cassiel au Ciel (Patrick Mengele) is an experimental musician from the high north of Germany.
The name comes from the Movie "the sky over Berlin" by Wim Wenders. The musical style is an mixture of noise, electro and experimental soundscapes. Instruments like the guitar, bass, drums and electronics are used in the music, but other sounds like dishes, razors, chairs oder records, too. Beneath the music, Cassiel au Ciel is interested in modern painting. He sometimes combines both with the concept: I paint my music and perform my pictures.

Komponisten Duo König & Wießenthaner
 

Gero Koenig hat aus seiner Klang- und Wahrnehmungserforschung nach 5 Jahren kontinuierlicher Entwicklungsarbeit den Prototyp des Instruments "Chordeograph" fertiggestellt. In seinen Konzertperformances versetzt er bis zu 37 Saiten am Instrument mit "Leisten" aus unterschiedlichen Metallen, Hölzern und Kunststoffen simultan in Schwingungen. Bereits minimale Änderungen der Bewegung können zu intensiven Klangveränderungen führen. Es entsteht ein Mikrokosmos fließender Klangentwicklungen von orchestraler Dichte und Weite.

Peter Wießenthaner entwickelte die Querflöte zu einer Kollektion von Flöten mit dem Ziel einer Verdichtung des Tonraums in all seinen Elementen. Durch einzigartige Bohrkonstellationen der einzelnen Flötenrohre und Glissandoflöten die er entwickelt hat, erreicht er eine klangliche Verschiebung und Auffächerung der Kerntöne mit starken Veränderungen der Tonqualitäten. Mit live-elektronischen Mitteln und Programmierungen in MAX und PROCESSING wird eine audio- visuelle Umgebung geschaffen, in der die Elemente ein Netzwerk mit vielfältigen Bezügen und Abhängigkeiten bilden.

In ihrem Komponisten-Duo erforschen Gero Koenig und Peter Wießenthaner Freiheitsgrade der Steuerung und Interaktion komplexer mikrotonaler Klangschichtungen. Im Spannungsfeld traditioneller und komplexer Klangerzeugung werden verschiedene instrumentale Klangspektren zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt. Querflöten-Töne verschränken sich mit den komplexen Chordeograph-Klangspektren und bilden mit diesen spezifische Konstellationen.

Gero Koenig has completed the prototype of the instrument "Chordeograph" from his sound and perception research after 5 years of continuous development. "Chordeograph" is about generating sounds based on arcaic means. Using "sliders" made of metal, wood and glass up to 37 strings are grinded and stimulated simultaneously. Each movement is reflected in the sound in some variation ranging from minimal to dramatic. Gero Koenig forms in his concertperformances a microcosm of flowing sound developments resulting in orchestral dimensions.

Peter Wießenthaner developed the flute to assemble a collection of flutes with the aim to compress the space of tones in all its aspects. Based on unique drill constellations on each flute tubes and glissando flutes which he developed, he achieves a tonal displacement and diversification of the core notes with strong adjustments of the qualities of tones. Accompanied by live-electronic elements and progamming in MAX and PROCESSING an audio-visual environment is created, offering a network of elements with multiple references and dependancies.

In their composer duo Gero Koenig and Peter Wiessenthaner investigate possibilities of the control and interaction of complex microtonal sounds. Between the poles of traditional and complex sound generation different instrumental sound spectrums are related. Tones played with flutes are interleaved with complex chordeograph sounds resulting in specific constellations.

Diatribes
 

Diatribes - a duo of hyperactive improvisors from Geneva, Switzerland, since 2004 - is defined by an assemblage of objects/percussions/electronics, a dense and laid sound, a tension between horizontality and cuts, an acoustic hyper-sensibility, a minimal language with a generosity of matter, layering textures and drones in a lively but stable way. After a voracious youth exploring free jazz, noise, musique concrête and free improv, and many collaborations with international musicians such as Magda Mayas, Bertrand Gauguet, Robin Hayward, Dominic Lash, Partick Farmer, Derek Shirley and Hannah Marshall, Barry Guy, Keith Rowe, amongst others, they have chosen to focus on their own strict duo music. During the past year they have intensely toured across Europe and beyond. Cyril Bondi and d’incise are both very active in the Swiss experimental scene, leading the Insub Meta Orchestra, a very large ensemble, and created in the INSUB. label, netlabel & association (since 2006, as Insubordinations). Their unstoppable energy led them to build a strong network around these activities. They have other bands together, including Queixas (with Abdul Moimême) and a subbass quartet (with Derek Shirley and Dragos Tara), and other occasional collaborations.
Cyril plays solo and with the post-jazz trio Plaistow and d’incise plays solo, works on
electro-acoustic set-ups and compositions, and does graphic designs.

Doppelganger
 

Doppelganger were born out of the lucky combination of creative personalities, cancelling whatever generation or language gap in drafting an aesthetic manifesto directed to listeners of the future.

The primal core of Doppelganger entity consists of vocal exploration and aural experimentation with a rhythm section of pulsating energy. Pat Moonchy: voice/electronic device and Lucio Liguori: guitar from Italy have this year joined forces with Johnny Larssen: bass and Lars “Skjit-Lars” Nicolaysen: drums from the Norwegian band Blaakraft for a live improvisation especially for the Avantgarde Festival in Schiphorst. This is also going to be the next Doppelgänger release!"

Ekin Fil
 

Ekin Fil is the solo project of Ekin Üzeltüzenci who also sang and played keyboards for noise­rock trio Proudpilot. Her music is very personal and heartbreakingly delicate? whether rushing through some industrial noises cut by ambient breaks or story telling with dreamy gazes. Her first mini album, "We Are Hours", summarizes her experience with playing with computer sounds and exposes her wilder and darker side. After that record she has moved to a much more softer but still delicate direction and released "Soon" in 2009. Her record "Language" which released from the San Francisco's label Root Strata in 2011 as cassette.“Language” presented listeners with a fractured, hazy soundworld in which half­remembered melodies and wraith­like vocals cohered into dark and hypnotic masses. After that she released an LP from San Diego's label Students of Decay in 2013. On this self­titled album, Ekin opens the curtains a bit, letting in some light and offering up an even more refined album.

Ekin Fil'in kendisinin yayınladığı “We are Hours”, “Soon” albümlerinden sonra 2011 senesinde San Francisco’lu label Root Strata’dan kaset formatıyla yayınlanan “Language” albümü bulunuyor. Müziğini çoklukla gitar ve pedallardan oluşturan Ekin Fil, 2013 yılında San Diego'lu drone label'ı Students of Decay'den kendi ismini taşıyan bir plak çıkardı. 2014 senesinin mart ayında İngiliz label Exotik Pylon Records'tan bu defa synthesizer ve pedallarla yapılandırdığı 5 şarkılık bir EP çıkaracak olan Ekin Fil'in Türkiye'den Biblo ve Amerika'dan Jefre Cantu Ledesma ile ortak işleri de bulunuyor.

My main musical interest and inspiration comes from folk music. It’s self-contained, simple and poetic qualities always inspire and return me to my roots and my childhood. I often spent my holidays at my grandmother’s village and remember well the colorful life there and special relationship between people that form the basis of folklore.
I see many possibilities for experimentation based on various folk traditions attracting musicians of different approaches and experience. I am incredibly attracted by the ritual base of folk music which in my opinion very naturally connects with minimalistic, contemporary and improvisational mind.

Эвелина Петрова Виртуозный аккордеонист, талантливый композитор, оригинальный вокалист. Одно из наиболее ярких, своеобразных, глубоких и неподдельных явлений в современной русской музыке. Ее творчество сочетает русскую деревенскую стихию и утонченные традиции петербургского андеграунда, филигранное исполнительское мастерство и спонтанную импровизацию, тонкий артистизм и глубину музыкальной мысли. Для многих любителей музыки она воплощение синтеза современной импровизационной музыки и русского народного музыкального духа.

Училась в Академии Театрального Искусства, где была непременным участником всех художественных акций и концертов, занималась импровизацией и приобщалась к широкому эстетическому кругу новой музыки. В 2002 г. закончила Санкт-Петербургскую Государственную Консерваторию. С 2012-2014 учится в Аспирантуре г. Осло, Норвегия.

HUMAN ABFALL bestehen seit Herbst 2011 aus Menschen, die an unwirtlichen Orten wie Stuttgart und Berlin leben müssen. Das anziehende Soundgerüst besteht aus noisig-surfigem Gitarrensound mit knarzigen, waveigen Bassläufen und einem zielsetzend, minimalistisch scheppernden Schlagzeugbeat. Die Musik der Gruppe Human Abfall äußert sich in technikschwerem Rhythmus, ist mehr dystopische Stimmungsmalerei als einfach nur eindringliche Melodie. In den wutentbrannten, manisch wiederholten Dada-Parolen werden Gefühle, Alltagsgegenstände, Zustände widergespiegelt und auf ein eindringliches Minimum reduziert. Von Stück zu Stück entsteht der klaustrophobische Eindruck, ein Kurt Schwitters habe seine Schere an den literarischen Werken Jean-Paul Sartres, Simone de Beauvoirs, Albert Camus’ und Gabriel Marcels angesetzt, um die Collage der immer wiederkehrenden Textbausteine mit Hammer und Nagel dem Zeitgeist anzuheften. Eine ganz eigene Erzählart entsteht, weder literarisch noch musikalisch – mehr wie Armdrücken gegen die Wand. Human Abfall sind: Pavel Svart, JFR Moon, Ringo Stelz, Flavio Bacon

HUMAN ABFALL arose in fall 2011 out of people who had to live in inhospitable places such as Stuttgart and Berlin. Their fascinating sound-scaffoldings are made of noisy-surfing creaky guitars , wavy bass runs and a way-pointing, minimal clanky drumbeat. Their music is composed of technically difficult rythmns, more of a dystopic ambience-scaping rather than just an insistent melody. Feelings, daily objects or moods are projected through angry and madly repeated dada-paroles and then reduced to an urging minimum. Piece after piece , a claustrophobic feeling grows , like if Kurt Schwitters had applied his scissors to the literary works of Jean-Paul Sartres, Simone de Beauvoirs, Albert Camus’ and Gabriel Marcels for then nailing the over and over repeated lyrics modules into the zeitgeist. A very peculiar narrative style arises, neither literary nor musical- more like arm-wrestling against a wall. Human Abfall are: Pavel Svart, JFR Moon, Ringo Stelz, Flavio Bacon

Visual Bassic
 

As visual bassic, Katrin Bethge (overhead projections) and John Eckhardt (bass) create audiovisual situations in real time which balance active composition with self organizing processes. Employing light refracting objects, liquids and everyday materials directly on her projector, Katrin Bethge conjures up equally cosmic and microscopic spaces. John Eckhardt’s structured yet always changing live electronic music draws on stylistic influences such as Krautrock, Drone and Dub Techno - a personal language for the bass guitar committed to pulsating low frequencies as well as to spectral soundscaping.

Kevin Schmidt is interested in the experience of the spectacular, and the experience of art as a part of this. His works recreate spectacle in a manner that both exposes its workings yet simultaneously allows for immersion. Many works use a strategy of „the cover song“, whereby familiar popular spectacles are re-enacted or re-staged but displaced – often into wilderness settings. In this manner the vernaculars of both popular culture and the sublime are examined. Similarly, Schmidt focuses attention on the context – whether museum or gallery, awards ceremony, or festival – ruminating on the conventions of display to both reveal them and to revel in them.

Mia Zabelka
 

Mia Zabelka, composer, violinist and vocalist from Vienna, with czech, jewish and french familiar background, lives in the Austrian region of southern Styria.
As a performer of Avantegarde Music she has developed a unique language based on the de- and reconstruction of the violin’s sonic possibilities, expanding the instrument using live electronic devices and innovative performance techniques.
Mia Zabelka developed the process she describes as automatic playing, continuously exploring sound and music as physical phenomena, always pushing back the boundaries in radical and provocative performances and compositions that question established notions and given structures.

Uwe Bastiansen aka "stadtfisch" wird eine einmalige "flex"-Besetzung präsentieren. Es gelingt ihm immer wieder, die entferntesten Musikstile und die unterschiedlichsten Musiker auf einer Bühne zusammenzubringen. Die sich dabei ständig ändernden Instrumentierungen sprechen dabei eine deutliche Sprache - von Maschinen über Gitarren bis zu Taikotrommeln, von Querflöten über Lyras zu Kontrabässen, von Ketten über Triangeln zu Blasinstrumenten etc... Im Internet und auf diversen Tonträgern lassen sich genügend Belege dafür finden. Jeder Zuschauer, der glaubte, er wüsste genau was passieren wird, ist bislang immer wieder eines besseren belehrt worden. Wer den Auftritt auf dem Avantgardefestival 2014 verpasst....

Uwe Bastiansen aka "stadtfisch" will present a unique "flex"-lineup. Again and again he succeeds to bring the most unrelated music styles and the most different musicians together, live on stage. The permanentely changing formation speaks a clear language - machines meet guitars meet taikodrums, transverse flute meets marching lyre meets double bass, chainsaw meets triangle meets wind instruments etc. There are extensive evidences in the internet and on several sound carriers. Stefan Weinzierl + Jacob Sello
 

Schlagzeuger und Multi-Perkussionist Stefan Weinzierl sucht stets nach Herausforderungen jenseits aller Genregrenzen. Nach seinem Schlagzeugstudium an der HfMT Hamburg (Master 2010) begann er, sich vertieft der Schlagzeug-Sololiteratur und multimedialen Kompositionen zu widmen und entwickelte in Zusammenarbeit mit Komponisten neue Konzertformate, die das Interesse von
nationalen und internationalen Musikfestivals weckten. So gastierte er u.a. in Prag, Straßburg, Oslo, Hamburg und Hitzacker. Seine Multimedia-Performance »...as time goes by...«, aus der die zwei beim Avantgarde Festival zur Aufführung kommenden Stücke stammen, wurde 2013 auf dem Festival für zeitgenössische Musik »Greatest Hits« auf Kampnagel uraufgeführt. Das Projekt »Der Hexenkessel« führte ihn 2011 auf die Guthman Musical Instrument Competition nach Atlanta, USA. Zusammen mit Jacob Sello wurde er für die Performance »Licht und Hiebe mit dem Jury-Sonderpreis ausgezeichnet.

Stefan Weinzierl studied Percussion at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg (Master exam 2010). Since then, he has been focussing on contemporary chamber music and multimedia performances. In recent years, he perfomed on numerous national and international festivals, so as Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker, enter 4th generation festival Karlsruhe, NIME 2011 Oslo and Elbphilharmonie Concerts Hamburg. 2011 Weinzierl and Jacob Sello won the jury award for their project »Hexenkessel« at the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition in Atlanta/USA. Jacob Sello (*1976) ist Tontechniker, promovierter Musikwissenschaftler (Thema: Klanginstallationen, 2012) und Absolvent des Masterstudiengangs “Multimediale Komposition” an der HfMT Hamburg.
Sein künstlerisches Interesse gilt den aufregenden Möglichkeiten der Interaktion, die sich im Spiel zwischen ausgebildeten Musikern, akustischem Musikinstrument und modernster Digitaltechnik ergeben. Als Resultat entstehen Kompositionen für durch Klarinettenspiel gesteuerte RC-Helikopter oder ein von einem DJ bespieltes, pneumatisch präpariertes Disklavier (selbstspielender Konzertflügel). 2011 wurde er für seinen Hexenkessel mit einem Jury-Preis bei der renommierten Guthman Instrument Competition in Atlanta/USA ausgezeichnet.


Jacob Sello (*1976) is audio engineer, musicologist (PhD-thesis: sound-installation-art, 2012) and alumnus of the master-class Multimedia Composition at HfMT Hamburg.
He is highly interested in the exiting possibilities of interactivity arising from the conjunction of trained musician, traditional acoustic instruments and state-of-the-art technology. Pieces for clarinet controlled RC- helicopters or DJ-controlled pneumaticially prepared disklavier-pieces are the outcome. Jacob Sello loves to develop innovative controllers for his interactive installations, computermusic and multimedia-performances. In 2011 he was awarded a “honorary mention” for his Hexenkessel at the renowned Guthman Instrument Competition in Atlanta/USA.

 

 
THEE VHS CvLT
 

THEE VHS CvLT ist ein Kollektiv dreier Künstler mit Augenmerk auf Visualität und Rückgriff auf aussterbende
Technik. Für das Avantgardefestival 2012 erschufen Volker Hartmann-Langenfelder und Thorsten Soltau eine Melange
aus manipulierten Videosequenzen, live abgenommen von Videogeräten sowie einer Auswahl von Kompositionen
welche Filmsamples und Mediaschnipsel beinhalten. Arne Wilken erstellte dazu im Vorfeld eine Installation aus zerlegten Videokassetten und ihrem Inhalt, welche assoziativ zusammengehängt für die Besucher begehbar gemacht
wurde.
Für das AF 2014 plant der VHS CvLT eine extra für das Festival erstellte Performance, basierend auf drei Röhrenmonitoren plus Beamer, welche mit speziellen Sequenzen angesteuert in völliger Dunkelheit agieren. Der Livesound von Thorsten Soltau besteht aus Schallplattenhängern, Tonbandmanipulationen und Mediasamples aus 3 Jahrzehnten TV-Geschichte. Arne Wilken stellt dazu als permanentes Objekt für die Festivaltage einen Stuhl aus, welcher aus
Videokassetten besteht.

A collective of three artists, THEE VHS CvLT centers around visual aspects and the use of obsolete technical media
machines. For the AF 2012 Volker Hartmann-Langenfelder and Thorsten Soltau created a melange of manipulated
video sequences, taken live from videoplayers and selected compositions circling around media snippets and samples
taken from movies. Arne Wilken sculpted an installation of dissected VHS tapes and the inner parts which was
accessible on the upper floor as a hanging associative art project.
For the AF 2014 THEE VHS CvLT plans a specific performance, made only for the festival. The performance will be set around three CRT displays and a beamer in total darkness. All displays will be triggered by visual sequences,
creating a unique combination of lights, flashes and pictures. The liveset will be made from record hangers, reel to
reel manipulations and samples of 3 decades TV history. Arne Wilken displays a chair made from VHS tapes as a
permanent object for the festival days.
